Before diving into rug sizes, it's crucial to determine the purpose of the rug in your space.

Is it a bedroom, a lounge room or a room that needs to be defined.

What level of comfort underfoot will it need to be? These are questions that will help bring the perfect space together.

size

One of the first steps in selecting the right rug size is to measure your space. It's essential to have accurate measurements to avoid purchasing a rug that's either too small or too large. Use a tape measure! No guessing here.

living space

  • Never choose a rug that’s too small, it can give the impression of reducing the room's size.

  • Always choose the best quality rug you can afford.

  • Want to create a luxurious feel for the space, go with oversized!

  • Leave at least 30cm between the rug and the walls

  • The rug should anchor all the furniture. Ideally, the rug should be large enough that all the furniture pieces sit on it, or at the very least, the front legs of the seating should be on the rug.

dining area

  • Select a rug the same shape as your dining table. Always make sure it’s large enough for the back legs to slide in and out without catching on the rug.

  • If you have an extendable table, make sure the rug is large enough for when the table is extended.

right materials

The right materials can really help give that refined and sophisticated aesthetic look you want.

polypropylene

For a low cost, high durability you can’t go past polypropylene. It’s extremely durable, water resistant, easy to clean and it has the same dense feel as wool. It’s perfect in a family or kids play room and for homes that have furry friends in them! It comes in a great range of colours and patterns and it can often be washed in the washing machine (but always check the manufacturer’s instructions first)

Polypropylene is a man made material that is engineered to have a wide variety of benefits - it feels like a mix between silk and wool, is super soft, but is also "stain resistant". This means is if you happen to have a spill getting to it quickly it won't absorb right away and will lift straight off - impressive and practical in households with kids or pets.

wool

Wool rugs are a great option, wool rugs do shed, it's a natural feature of the woollen fibre and isn't considered a fault. Shedding isn't usually a problem after a settling in period, dependant upon use. Regular vacuuming, 1-2 times a week should help during this time. This should keep your rug fresh and clean and prevent dirt penetrating the pile.

Side note - It's important to make sure that you don't use a power head and just vacuum gently so that you're not breaking the wool fibres.

If your budget allows it then wool with its beautiful soft pile is perfect. Wool’s natural oils repel water, dust and dirt. Perfect for families and homes that have lots of visitors. Regular rotation helps worn-fibers from becoming a permanent fixture on an area of the rug.

There are many other decorating aspects to consider when choosing a rug. Colours, patterns and room style are all individual.
